Re: What is the difference between SE4 and SE4Gold
In addition to what everyone else said, SE4 Gold also allows more varied mount types, and special damage types. These are not used in SE4 Gold, just available to modders.
You have to try and figure out ... how you want to play (that is which mods you must try) and who you're playing against (what sort of PBW, PBEM games are you in, what Version do they have, and how dense the pre-Gold games are on PBW)
Like a lot I other people, I went for Gold, just to support Malfador and Shrapnel. And because I never want to be without a bugfix for any program.
That said, the game is just as much fun either way, and I don't think the bug fixes convert from non-Gold = constant lockups and crashes to Gold = flawless running. The game program is very stable, at least for me.

Re: What is the difference between SE4 and SE4Gold
Gold = lots of PBW games to join
not gold = not many PBW games, hardly any mods.

Re: What is the difference between SE4 and SE4Gold
Go to www.malfador.com, click to the se4 pages, click "patches" and look up the history.txt - se4 classic stops at 1.49 - everything between 1.49 up to 1.91 is Gold only.
Read it and drool...

Re: What is the difference between SE4 and SE4Gold
I too still use the old original SE4.
My reasons for not buying SE4 Gold when it was new involved, umm, old controversies that there is no need to revive. Let sleeping dogs lie.
My reason for not buying Gold now has to do with being desperately broke. My career went on the rocks in the wake of 9/11 and has never recovered. I'd like to support Shrapnel and Malfador, but feeding myself and keeping the lights on has to come first
Anyways, if you have the cash to burn, Gold is apparently worth it.
On the other hand, I'll be glad to play a game of SE4 "Classic" with you on PBW. I'd really like to get back to playing against live opponents.

There are some empires looking for players in the eternal "P&N on PBW, take 2" game... not sure how viable they are though

Re: What is the difference between SE4 and SE4Gold
Well, many of them have tens of thousands of Syndicate Credits built up in their accounts.
If you do take over, you'll be able to buy a very fine set of maintenance free ships or technologies from me.
I also have significant collection of supersized fighters with point defense installed on them .

Yep. Nobody liked my 'free-for-all' idea.
