You are right I have never tried to let the AI build a sphere- or ringworlds. But I had all needed elements under construction, when I turned an empire to computer control. The AI scrapped everything and there was no lack of resources!
To construct ring- or sphereworlds the AI would have to send a space yard ship to a star, construct space yard bases there (10 for ringworld, 20 for sphereworld), start building the ring- or sphereworld placement component, then start at the right time to construct the cables and platings, so that erverything is ready at the same time together. This would be a whole computer program for its own.
May be this will be implemented in a patch for Version 1.3486!

Re: ? on AIs
Baseships - All the AI needs in order to build baseships is the correct level of research (which seems to stop just short initially in most AI's), a design in the DesignCreation file, and an entry in the ConstructVehicle file to tell the AI to build it.
Sphereworlds - Havn't tried to get them to, but looked into it some - Don't beleive it is possible because there is no Vehicle type that covers ring/sphere world construction - thus would have to use other types of vehicle types to call for designs and construction of them. Since the AI would then be unable to recognize what they are for, it would build them anywhere and would be unable to use them for the construction.
I have seen the AI make very effective use of Space Yard Ships though.

That sounds intersting. What AI and what did it do with them? Build defense bases on warp points?

Re: ? on AIs
AI had a stack of about 10 Space Yard Ships that it would move to the closest resupply base to its war zone. Using those ships it would rapidly build a large force of ships, bases and fighters, while providing a point where it could repair whole fleets in a turn. In about 10 turns it had built up enough defenses to hold the resupply base, and would move the Ship Yard Ships to the next resupply base, this made one hell of a snowball effect with the AI rapidly expanding because they could return damaged fleets to battle much faster, allowing them to complete the conquest of the system faster, which would give them more resources to build more ships etc... Worst game I ever had - lost 4 big fleets, and 3 systems just slowing them down enough to build a good defensive position.

Nasty! Was it a modded AI? Has to be since I haven't seen the stock AI even build space yard ships. Which race was it that did this to you? I want to play against them.

Try the Klingons and the Romulans ! I have played a testgame (regarding maintenance) and after 100 turns the Klingons had 11 Dreadnought SY ships with 2 SY components each (? does it make sense ? I would build a SY and a repair component...), the Romulans seem to be very active with regards to stellar manipulation also, they had 6 Battle cruise SY ships. I still have got the saves from turn no. 100, but don't ask me if the races have done any reasonable things with the SY ships (the test was under full AI control, I have just hit the next turn button... The only thing that I have noticed: The AI often tried to move the SY ships when they had something in their build queues, which of course brings up an error message.

Re: ? on AIs
Two shipyard components is not suppose to happen but the AI can do it, something to do with the ship design file. They get the benefit of both yards for construction so they can crank out the stuff!
