Default The worst galaxy ever

Hello all, I feel the need to share my misery with the people of this board... (misery loves company )

In one of my pbw games I've spent nearly two years exploring. In those two years I've managed to find 2 colonizeable planets (both in my home system), 5 planetless systems, 1 nebula, 1 black hole, encountered 2 sadistic neighbors who take pleasure in shooting my (unarmed!) ships, and my colony ships are running out of fuel. Two more systems left to explore -one of which I'm certain is either claimed or inhabited by my neighbor.

note: galaxy is not set ancient

Anyone else care to share their misery?

I feel your pain. I expected, based upon playing a number of other computer games, that all start up would not be equal. I am in 5 or 6 games. In two, I have absolutely terrible positions, ranking 18, and 19, etc. In some others, im in the middle, and one I'm actually near the top. No matter my position, I will play to the end because I would want others to do so if roles were reversed. Take the good ones with the bad ones. I guess thats along way of saying, get into several games. One will be good for you, the rest, you give the other players a challenge. BTW, about your colony ships, may I suggest: arming you colony ships, or putting armor on them. AND, build one ship with lots of supply storage, and use it to acompany (in same fleet) your colony ships on the first portion of their journey, and so extend their range.

JenMax, you're in Geo's PBW Elim Tourney, aren't you?

How was your start there?

Mine was a mixed blessing. Poor planet selection, but great position. I was in the middle of a long string of systems, so I could expand both ways, and defend my whole empire by guarding two WP's. Even better, I was sort of off in the top left corner, away from the other 3 players...

Add to that the fact that I have been blessed with a staunch and tenacious ally in the Alphamoo of Jimbob55, and I'm not doing too bad. Which is surprising, since both my enemies seem to be rather stronger players than I am.

Ack...another nebulae system *bawls*

If this were a RP game I wouldn't care too much but when the goal is to eliminate other empires... *sigh* I curse the fates. I suppose though that all the empty systems and blackholes lying between my empire and sentient races means my race may be able to survive for a long time...

Thanks for the advice Jen. I'll try out your recommendations as soon as I develop the tech.

i guess the good side to that situation is that your opponents wont have any colonizeable planets either. at least you did not start smack nexto a hostile race that is keeping you busy while everyone else is exploiting the galaxy.

If I recall correctly, the elimination tournament rounds are being played with four humans and two survivors go on to the next round?

Fortify, fortify, fortify. Hopefully the three guys "out there" will winnow themselves down to one for you. Ally with the strongest to help this along, perhaps.

Shoujo, which PBW game are you in that is so bad? Would it be the Dracus one? I am currently ranked no 1 in that one (we only played 15 turns or so, with a one planet start), but I may need to drop out in a few days and perhaps you could take over...

Possum,

In the tourney, my start position was average, as near as I can tell. I did start very close to another player empire. Since the rules for the first round included a non ranked advancement for TWO of the four players, it made sense to offer a full partnership and full cooperation in tech, trading, etc ASAP in the game. The first player I met also saw this wisdom. So an average start position was enhanced by a good ally, almost from the beginning.
