What's your budget? For under $100 US, you can get a FX 5700 LE with 128 mb of memory. What's important to look at is also what version of DirectX and OpenGL are supported, which pixel and vertex shaders version arre supported, etc.

I hate ATI cards. They came stock in the computers we bought a couple years ago at work and none of our programs seemed to worked. We downloaded the latest drivers and everything. We bought nVidia cards and replaced them and haven't had any problems since then. nVidia in my opinion is the way to go.

Any hardware that comes with those pre-built machines is suspect.
For all we know if could have been dropped on the floor and stepped on during assembly.
Maybe they just throw in the marginal parts that are more likely to be returned if purchased separately by knowledgable tecchies.

Putting your own together from scratch is good.
