The Shield Depleting weapons area will do both: you will get Shield Depleters first (reduce Shield points, and only Shield points), and then Shield Disruptors (destroy the Shield Generator themselves).

The standard caveat for the Shield Disruptors: you need to do enough damage to take down one component per hit. If the weapon only does 30 damage points, it will not be enough to destroy a Shield Generator at 40 hitpoints, regardless of how many times you try. Shield Disruptors also have a low range and are very expensive, at least in the vanilla game (it is the same in Devnull, if memory serves).

That is what I needed. Basically, the only reason I would use them would be a Massive mount on a large weapons platform. 5x damage and +7 range. So it looks like I am going to need to go through a couple more areas of the tech tree to get to the disrupters. The empire attacking me places 7 to 8 shield generators on his BB and DNs and it is a pain to try and weed through that, even with massive mounts. But hopefully the 45 large weapon platforms with massive quantum V torpedos and 1000 fighters on the next planet he is attacking will put a dent in his fleet.

Using the Shield Depleters will really tear through his shields, though.
Count out just enough to strip one of his ships, and then put your choice of hull-busting weapon to fill the rest of your space.
