Hey dita-
Played your scenario this evening -- WOW, its small but fast and furious. I really liked the map design, opened up many tactical possibilities. It also looked good. The only problem I had was winning -- I was run over!
Thanks again for sharing - was fun, if humbling.

Hello dita!

Good work here, particularly for a first attempt!

I agree with Pepper, this is a tough one. Those were fine gaps you let in the defence line... Plus the force half deployed...
Anyway all wargame players have to be somewhat masochistic

I am more in for big and high-tech battles (although high-tech enough generally turns to a stone-age brawl in a flaming junkyard ), particularly when designing, but this is one good scenario you have here.

Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for the feedback. I was unsure of the difficulty level. Something that is hard to judge when playing your own designed scenario. I got a decisive and marginal victory.

I wanted to give the impression of surprise a little bit, hence the "half deployed" force. Letting the played choose where to send those all importance reserves.

I myself usually prefer hi-tech battles, but I thought for my first attempt I`ll try something small. The idea is to perhaps develop it into a small campaign based around the historical event and what could have happened. Perhaps I`ll incorporate a few "hi-tech" surprises (well, as hi-tech as you can get in 1961 !!!) in the campaign.

That could give you a fine campaign all right!

Have you a storyline/ historical data on this? What was the political stand of Iraq at the time? Any powerful allies, any internal instability? Other countries possibly joining alongside the British forces?

Oh well, no matter, I gues you can reflect all that by yourself!

Good luck!

I`m currently finding only very small bits on imformation from the net.

The details I have thus are is the it was 1st July 1961, operation vantage. HMS Bulwark landed 42 (and 45 followed later??) commando with hunter and Electric Canberra aircraft in support from UK,Aden, Kenya and Cyprus. "V" force aircraft were on standby in cyrpus.

One source also says that paratroops were sent to reinforce the task force.

They were sent to Kuwait to deter the threat of invasion from Iraqi forces which had gathered on the border. One interesting article is--
(though I haven`t fully studied it yet!)
www.cia.gov/csi/studies/fall_winter_2001/article03.html

If anyone can find/have other info then I`d appreciate it greatly

Of the top of my head I think there was also at least a squadron's worth of Centurions sent to back up the Royal Marines, although they may not have arrived before the crisis was over. They were coincidentally on a training mission in Aden or Oman at the time.
