Old: not quite enough lighting.
New: Maybe too much. I'm abivalent about the rings on the top, as well.

Actually, that's what I was thinking as well  I'm going to get rid of the top rings, and reduce lighting slightly as well, then I think I'll be happy with it.
What size do you think this ship should be? LC or Cruiser maybe?

I also liked the rings. Perhaps you could use diffrent symbols on the backs of the various ship sizes. I think it would make them look very nifty.
