Some comments:

The secondary mission have several functions as:

1. Giving the feeling of multiple stages of a mission.
2. Ability to slightly modify some parameters of the primary mission by assigning special objectives and relating the outcome/score of the battle with the cross-link direction.

Ok, I will try to make things more dynamic.

There wont be any possibility to replenish the losses between the missions. So depending on the outcome of the first contact I guess that the player that lost alot need some kind of handicap to keep going. The brigade level plan for the operation had a entire battalion in reserve ready to deploy to LZ Pete if needed.

Should the player have gotten the proper outcome of the sceondary mission and succeded with the "correct" primary one, then the bonus mission could kick in.
An all inclusive R&R trip to Tokyo... Or a strike at a undefended VC Rgt HQ (They where monitored during the battle, keept poor radio discipline and could just as easily been pinpointed)

Hi,

The secondary mission should only be a fraction of the primary.
Giving the fact that the player should keep the strength of his forces at an acceptable level the player should decide if the task to fulfill the objectives of the secondary mission is worth the risk.

I will try to create a dummy secondary mission today to demonstrate the mechanism (VP locations) of such a technique.

Keep in mind that if (FOR EXAMPLE) the player succeed in destroying the secondary objective (an NVA artillery park) he may face less hostile artillery in the primary mission.
There are dozens of bonus or penalties that the player can inherit from a secondary mission... It is possible even to increase or decrease the time allowance of the primary mission (+/- 10 turns, for example).

SO many options !!!

cheers,
