There was at least one friendly province he could have retreated to. If it was an attempt to lift a siege by the troops from inside the castle, would that affect things?

Yes I do beleive that might be right. If the unit i breaking siege and is forced to retreat, it dies. That is consistent with my past experience.
Someone who knows more is free to correct me.

As the Tomb Lords survey the wreckage that once was the kingdom of Arcoscephale, they can only wonder what prompted the misguided followers of Pasha to treacherously attack C'tis without warning...surely they must have known of the WRATH that was to be visited upon them for their impertinence?
But such questions are for the living to ponder at length; the dread, dead Tomb Kings have other concerns--how best to grind the people of Arco under their dry, scaly heels, for example!
