Freelancer is so much more fun if you find a good mod. I have never had any major graphic problems so I can't help there.

What exactly is it that people like so much about Freespace? I played it for a time but it didn't seem like anything spectacular. I didn't think it was bad or anything but I didn't feel drawn by it either. Am I missing something?
