Re: Any One Going To Go See Serenity?
I found it bizarre that there was Chinese writing all over everything, but there were no Asians anywhere in the movie... Maybe the odd one in a big crowd, but that was it.
It was a descent movie. The acting was iffy at times, and the plot was often predictable, but overall it was not bad.
Going to the theater yesterday reminded me why I do not go to the movie theaters anymore... Yay for paying $7.50 (for a matinee!) to be bombarded with ads that tell me to come even earlier so I won't miss the ads they just told me I missed! And they say file trading is why movie ticket sales are down...

I can't remember why it is (without loading up my DVD of Firefly) but Joss explained why he wanted some "bastardized" version of Chinese as some sort of "throwback" language the characters used when upset or frustrated. It seemed to make sense (but I forgot what it was).
As to acting, I think Nathan did a good job. Everyone else seemed adequate except for Summer's performace which I found to be in-character quite well.
Even seeing it the second time at the theatre (to help with weekend sales), I found myself on the edge of my seat quite a bit (though I knew what was going to happen).

Re: Any One Going To Go See Serenity?
The Companion looked kind of Asian to me, but I am *very* poor in the "look at someone and figure out something (age, origin...)" department.
Other than that, it is a matter of politics I think: there is an Anglo-Chinese alliance, so it seems natural that some Chinese phrases would become widely used in English (I cannot speak about the movie, but I know there are more than a few such phrases in the series).

Morena Baccarin was born in Rio de Janeiro (sp.?) Brazil.
Like to see a photo of me with my arm around her?

Braggart.
I should have checked her name *before* posting. Well, the original inhabitants of America are said to come from Asia, so, you know... Point taken.

Re: Any One Going To Go See Serenity?
Ya, if you ask a 1000 people why they no longer go to the movies they will all tell you its because of the Ads, the cost, and the hassel.
They would rather stay home and buy the movie on DVD or rent it rather than pay $50.00 to sit in a crowded theater with a bunch of people who won't shut the hell up, are often sick, and get up and walk in front of you every five minutes when they can sit in the comfort of their own homes, eat microwaved popcorn and watch the movie on their new 52" plasma big screen.
Hollywood likes to cry foul and blame the lack luster box office sales on piracy but in truth its the adds, the theater costs for treats, the hassels, and the tick prices that have turned people to the lower cost of DVD's and jiffy pop pop corn.

Amen to that, Atro!
When I go, it's really my wife and me, so that's $16.00 just for tickets! And these days, GAS to get there.
Heck, we usually wait for the DVD and buy it, lay on our bed and watch the movie in our bedroom on our 56 inch Sony where the sound is driven by a Yamaha digital amp to a Bose surround sound system. Only went to see Serenity to help with box office totals.

Amen brother
I hate the captivity of the theater
I'm paying them to show me Ads?!?!
I'm paying them $4.00 for a tub of popcorn I could make at home for $0.25??!!?
I'm not even guaranteed that the ******** behind me won't start talking on his cell phone??!?
I have a nice big tv at home, so the only advantage of the movie theater for me is the sound system, and once I save $400 more I'll be able to buy a better surround sound system and that won't even be true.
I only rarely go see movies, and that is mostly for movies like Serenity where I want to encourage Hollywood for making it.
