SEIV is always going to be a successful game in its own right and I will bet a ship set, that it will remain popular long after SE V has been released. As it stands, I am as excited as a father of a 16 year old girl on prom night as I wait for the release of SE V.

No. But I think that some elements of SE:IV like the ability to easily add shipsets and the existing mod base and pbw system will keep it going for some time.

Hey I just checked strategy first's website, it lists winter 06 as the release date. Does anyone know why there's a disconnect between the publisher and the creator? surely someone must have seen this by now...

Well, thus far, neither Malfador or Strategy First has seemed to be overly concerned about updating their websites. The disconnect between the two sources is probably just because of the scarcity of updates on the part of both.
And hey, technically, it still could be a Winter 2006 release. That would mean it is released sometime between 21 December, 2006, and 31 December, 2006.
August would be nicer
