Re: OT: Star Trek 11 (?) news...
After reading Starczynski's and Zabel's pitch, I can safely say those two need to be hurt. With a rock or something.
His basic pitch is to reboot trek from before the original series where they find an ancient and obscure civilization with tons of nifty gadgets and stuff for a pilot. (There is a reason why B5: Crusade failed. There is a reason why Glen Larson's Buck Roger's season 2 failed. And, please sir, no more Vorlons).
And apparently, by the end of the pilot, Kirk fights it out with another alien to get the mysterious city of the ancients.... what? no ripped shirts?
Then he goes on to talk about a galactic "Da Vinci Code" conspiracy in the DNA of all kinds of races --- wait he said "Artist's signature"... that sounds like a soft-sell on Intelligent Design! Bah! Leave religion to Galactica! I know JMS is an athiest, but the man dumps far too much religious material into his work for my tastes.
That's not to say JJ Abrams deserves any better. I feel what he's doing will amount to a reboot of the frandchise much like JMS has been planning.
I'm personally a fan of the Susstrem (spelling?) Romulan War Trilogy and I think a good movie triliogy might serve the series good a few years down the road, but it's just too soon. Plus that trilogy would indicate that James T Kirk was named for a relative of his from that period, Capt. Tiberius Chase and not the roman emperor

The DNA thing isn't too original. In about the only NG episode I haven't seen they uncover evidence that the first ever aliens seeded various planets with their own DNA. This is why all the aliens are basically huamoids with slight differences.

Re: OT: Star Trek 11 (?) news...
I read that DATA survived the explosion of the Romulan ship but was so badly damaged that he had to be reconstructed and no longer looks like DATA. This will alow a new younger actor to play DATA.
Ya, that will work out just fine.

No one can play Data like Brent Spiner...and no one will be able to play Spock like Leonard Nimoy.
However, I will keep an open mind if they should being these characters back.

Re: OT: Star Trek 11 (?) news...
I wouldn't mind it if they decided to redo TOS with an all new cast and technology set. Given the advancements in technology since the 60's I am sure they could update the bridge and ship controls to look more in flow with our technology curve than they are currently in TOS.
Enterprise did a nice job, but was executed poorly over all with dull, conflicting, and unispiring stories that did not play well or lend themselves overall to the established pre-TOS time line. While I did like the Andorian and Tellorite episodes, I was left feeling as though I was cheated out of what could have become one of the best Star Trek series of all time. Mainly thanks too the lack of interest in writing solid logicially flowing episodes that used established trek history over the "hey lets do this, history be damned" method that was employeed in Enterprise.
Prior to TOS there were no practical invisiblity or cloaking screens. It was something comepletely new to the Federation. Yet by episode six or seven of Enterprise they encountered a race that had STNG hologram technology and a cloaking device. WTF!
It was established in TOS that the Romulans did not have cloaking technology, nor ship to ship visual capablity, or warp drive, yet in ENT they re-wrote history and gave the Romulans these capabilities. They pissed away any chance for a Romulan war and while I generally like what they did with the Klingons in ENT, they could have done more.
So here we are now. We have no where to go with the Star Trek franchise but back. Back to TOS and hopefully a well scripted movie and a solid cast that can live up to the tradition and expectations of a starving fan base.
I personally woudn't mind seeing a new TOS series, hell even a complete redo of TOS would be ok with me. It would be an omoge (sp) to the original series, hated by many, but accepted by most. The cast of the New Voyages interent videos have proven that people will accept a new cast playing Kirk and Crew so long as the stories are good, the action is solid, and the technology is believable. Hell our cell phones of today are smaller than the communicators of TOS. My calculator has more computing power than the Enterprises Computer, and floppy disks have all but gone extinct in the face of DVD's and memory cards.
TOS would benefit from a re-invigortion. Update the technology to look more in flow with our technology progression and five us a new TOS series that while not the old TOS is the new TOS complete with solid scripts, inventive casting, and dedicated acting.
I want a new Star Trek series that is tranditional and does not [censored] on the star trek time line like Enterprise did. One that is not a reset to zero series, but is a part of the greater universe that is Star Trek.

Re: OT: Star Trek 11 (?) news...
They would do better to walk away from the brand for five to ten years, then come back and launch a series that takes place AFTER all this other stuff.
I'm kind of sick of "re-imaginings" and "prequels". Can we not jump another 50-100 years into the future of the Trek universe?

I suggest we all boycott Star Trek shows till they come up with something good.
