It's absolutely safe to upload turns. The risk that the HD will completely fail is quite slight.

I left it at a friends place when I went to watch basketball on my way back from the store  . It won't take long to bring the thing up once I get it back to my apartment - sometime this afternoon or this evening.
No-one lost any turns.

Sorry for the delay, my computer is fixed and the game is again running.
I've purchased a new HD, I'll need to go restart the machine a few times tonight as I install stuff, but the downtime shouldn't be much.
