Strages - you tend to actually lose about 10% of your mages to old age. It's a real penalty, and with bad luck (losing a mage with a key 10% pick or something) it can be devastating, but it shouldn't be a dealbreaker. Mid era abyssia has some shortcomings but the old age is not their problem.
