And there's a town in Arizona called Picket Wire which is a deformation from a french word: Purgatoire (purgatory).
Who knows if Ontario was really a native tribe name or something else altogether?

We also have Why, Santa Clause, Punkin Center, and several other interesting town names here, along with one of my all-time favorite landmark names, Silly Mountain. The people who came to Arizona before the advent of air conditioning were truly an interesting breed.

Some of my Favorites here in Pennsylvania are the towns Mars and Apollo, plus Moon Township.
We also have North Versailles, pronounced "ver-SALES" (rather than the French "vair-SIGH").
