here is another link that deals with the AI using troops. Check out the Aquilaeian, and Orks (both included in the TDM-Modpack) as well as the Vikings (download available in the Mod Archive) for inspiration on troops and transports.
Sorry, I can't answer your other question. I have only done AI so far.

Thanks for the help! It's a pity about the custom Groups, but the answers to my first questions helped alot! Now my infantry can come in useful.

It is a shame that you can't add custom design types to the AI. Oh, well.
