Ok, here's a setup:

One Soviet NCO of Ukranian origin has just turned himself over to the German advance element. He has been very co-operative and volunteered some information - claiming that a counterattack has been ordered to push the Germans back across the river. The Soviet troops brought up for the attack are fresh but poorly trained, and morale is low. Food has been lacking for some time. Tank support has been promised but so far he has seen none. Rumours among the ranks suggests that the unit commander has been stalling the attack, waiting for the armour to arrive - but now been relieved by the ranking comissar. Seeing it as his only chance to live, the Ukranian NCO has deserted his post and given himself up.
