It looks good where the bottom right ship aligns with the shield effect. However, at the upper left it just looks funky. Like it is cutting into the ship or something of that nature.

I agree that the newer one looks better than the first three. You might want to make the 'flare' effect a bit larger, though. Large enough that you can start to see a spheric curve to it. We expect shields to be a sphere around the ship.

If it's going to be seen alot, it should be somewhat simple. If it's possible to make different effects for different shield types or weapons, then you could save the really fancy ones for rare and unusual stuff.
The other thing is that we can't see them in action. Where effects are involved, a large part of it is in how it looks in real-time.
