Re: Orbital Space Yards
Momentum would still be there and be even more dangerous.

Re: Orbital Space Yards
Yeah, they tend to fly stuff up into space and then stick it together. But the fine work is done with gravity.

Re: Orbital Space Yards
Big stuff and momentum is the problem.
With little stuff, you can put it inside the machine tools and clamp it down. The problem there is getting rid of the waste.

Re: Orbital Space Yards
Always easier to build on Earth, but the only reason that (or at least the theory is , nowadays) orbital construction is prefered is that they won't have to build/supply engines that are capable of overcome Earths gravity (escaping speed is 1km pro seconds, if I recall correctly !!)

Re: Orbital Space Yards
Yes, I think 1 km/sec will give you escape... but gravity is only 9.8 m/sec, so you only need to exceed .0098km/sec in continous acceleration.

Re: Orbital Space Yards
1G is a very impressive continuous acceleration. Escape velocity in under two minutes.
And travel to other stars in a reasonable time too.
