Default Re: Hosting games via Remote Desktop Connection?

I'd run the game as textmode server in command line window, anyway.

Thanks for the tips, apparently I am suffering from Microsoft's marketing strategy and the artificial limits that they impose on their software, anyway, so I guess I'll better look for another host and stay at Linux.

I wouldn't run it text mode on a windows server. You don't save any real system resources and you miss out on the flexibility.

For some strange reason, games run in text mode on windows machines use *more* resources than games run in windows and minimized. At least in 3.06 this was the case.

I use remote desktop whenever I'm playing from my laptop, out of fear that IP address clashes will trigger the copy protection.

If you are both playing in *and* hosting a game, RDC sometimes crashes the dom3 executable, at least on my machine. Of course, my machine is overclocked and not as stable as might be desired

Other than that, it appears to me that you can minimize a GUI session, log on from RDC, and then log in again and again from different machines without killing the game.

If you actually log out that might kill it, I've never tried it. But you can certainly administer a server by RDC.

Disclaimer: I am durnk.

If you are using a dialin server that is windows to host a game, then you should be able to play it from your desktop computer. That way running it and playing in it should not comflict with each other.
Just guessing.

(and yes I typed comflict. Its an old computer pun)

The problem is that if you want to use RDesktop with more than 2-3 concurrent sessions then you have to spend $$$. Not that it's any different to serve 2, 5, 12 or 100 people at once, but you can extort money by it. And since all the sessions are already in use I won't put up with that Microsoft crap, my tolerance limit is too low since there IS a better alternative. Back to Linux, with no artificial limits imposed. (yes, I am quite irritated and annoyed about this stuff...)
