I had an idea once of choosing a good large map and making a version of it that was just the province lines. Then tracking the provinces, using something like Gimp or ImageMagick to drop colors into the province and make it viewable online. That way a long running game could have a map like other games have which shows everyones growth in more than just numbers.

I know that everyone wouldnt like that kindof game but it would be an interesting option

Having to maintain my own state is a little drag though.

You will have to track the "our forces met no resistance" messages, too.

Have fun reading the logs.
Everytime I do it for a project like this I get distracted by other things in it and thinking "now what can I do with that knowledge".

Setup a postexec or preexec to copy the log to another file. If you let it keep running into the same file it will fill your machine fast
