There is a way  Select such a country that you'll get desired sides (IIRC for example Russia vs. China has Russia on the left, and when playing USA against DPRK I was always on the right) and then buy whatever you want for yourself as "Allied"

I was never there either but suffice to say our Communist Party chairman was there not too long ago and tells everyone how great it'd be there if not for those pesky imperialist ploys, so who am I to doubt his words?
