I have a more specific question about adding shipsets-

I want to use one of the shipsets for SE4 1.49 located at PBW; I don't really care how the AI uses this particular race, so can I just copy one of the current race AI files and .emp files and use them for this shipset?

Because the 1.49 AI files have trouble with 1.60.

Don't copy the AI text files or the EMP.

Copy only the BMPs, and splice in the text from another Gold AI.

Create a fresh EMP by starting random games until that race appears, taking control of the AI, and saving the empire.

You need to make the tree linked to a trait also, and then have only that race pick it, just like the organic and crystal trees.
