All horrormarks should be cumulative, IIRC. Items that give horrormarks will have their effect stack up over time. The same way with attacks that give horrormarks, if you get hit several times´it will get more severe.

I've hit powerful units with like a dozen Horror Mark spells to no obvious effect, so I'd be grateful for a confirmation on the mechanics for me.

I've also noted how some items just don't give the bigger HMs that fast(Lightless Lanterns), but others make the big marks quite fast(Forbidden Light).

All horrormarks are cumulative, no matter from spells or items. The value of "horror mark" is stored in a single byte near your magic paths. You can check the memory address if you are interested. The value of "horror mark" keep increasing while you are carrying certain items or hitted by certain spells, etc. However at each time the amount it increases depends on every single hit/item. When the accumulative value goes higher, that commander are more attractive to powerful horrors...

How do I look at the memory address?
