They were alone with their carrier. They didn't run to the corners but didn't attack anything either - they launched then "milled around"!

That is weird. Can you email me your savegame file? I can't think of why they would do that. Maybe if I could see it, I could figure it out.

Did the enemy ships perhaps have emissive armor? I have seen fighters not engaging a target, because they "think" that they cannot hurt the target that has emissive armor greater than the max. damage of the fighter weapons.

Did you check whether any of the "Do not fire on" options were set?

I've never used "fighter attack." Maybe it causes them to look for other fighters to attack??? And since there aren't any, they just sit there doing nothing??? I'm just making wild guesses.
