They have to be either Amphibians or Poor Amphibians to go from land to sea.
Recruiting independent amphibians (like the shamblers) is the easiest way, and if you get a water province with good independents you can recruit those as well.
Other options are summoning amphibian units and forging items that allow you to take units underwater.

As for playing online - my advice is to join a newbie game
