Damn, Used to be that the ships would not fire at all with the Don't Get Hurt strategy. Not even returning fire when chased. Just totally lame and vunerable.
Is it still that way?

Re: blockade............
Yes.
Works for your average Medical ships, Colony Ships and Freighters.
Carriers shouldn't be Don't get hurt, really.
I mean do you see the USS Nimitz running away in the middle of the Gulf war?

Re: blockade............
Well I've done a little experimenting in ver 1.49 and Gold and found what the difference is. In 1.49 ships in a fleet with "Don't Hurt Me" orders run to the corners. In Gold the ships ignored the feet orders and reverted to thier type orders. So if the individual ships types had Don't Hurt me orders it worked as normal. I guess the next question is why the ships ignored their fleet orders. (and no 'Ships' was not selected in 'Types that break formation')

Re: blockade............
You do not have to destroy any garrison on the planet in order to blockade it. You just have to survive whatever the planet throws at you. The easiest way to do this is to go edit your strategies: Instead of switching your ship to "do not get hurt", just go edit the strategy for the ship so that it will not attack Planets, Satellites and Bases...That will send it into the corner and out of harm's way unless there are enemy ships or fighters.
This works quite nicely as Docshane discovered...until he got a ship built. Then my ship went into planet-WP range to attack his ship. The result was not pretty for my poor little blockader

You still have to destroy whatever garrison the planet has.

Also, planets or moons can blockade. For example, if you have a treaty with someone and have colonized a moon over their planet, if the treaty is broken, both the moon and the planet are blockaded. When a ship enters the sector, the planetary defenses can fire on each other.

I've found that planetary defenses fire on each other without the prompting of a ship entering the sector: I had a moon colony and someone I was at war with tried to colonize the gas giant planet. Combat started when the colonizer entered the sector. Well nothing happened since the colonizer just stayed in the corner. After combat, the colonizer colonized the planet and then another combat occured. This time his gas giant could not run! My moon launched all of its missiles and wiped out his fledgling colony. Hahahahahahha

Heck ya the Nimitz would have hightailed it if presented with any kind of a legitimate threat. Why do you think they surround those carriers with dozens of escort ships and subs? Get the ship out of the way and let the planes and pickett ships kill anything that tries to get close. That's the whole definition of a modern carrier task forrce. They only bring the carrier close enough to the enemy for efficent flight operations. And with mid-air refueling, that is pretty far out.
