The length of time depends on the size so it's hard to answer that question.
We're talking weeks and months with a pbm game though.

The PBEM schedule might be slow at first, but once you're out of the early phase diplomacy alone can take more than an hour, and they you have to play the actual turn, and while you're waiting for the turn to come you can't help but think ahead for several turns, and then something goes wrong and you have to think everything again. It's quite fun.
