Yes, I'm talking about the AN/PPS-5A. I'm sure it could detect things at those ranges, I'm just not sure you'd be able to make them out from all the other stuff it detects and doesn't filter out according to the anecdote heh.

About the detection/identification it's like the sound analyst for a submarine. Some are able to make difference between moving branch and tank antenna, others will probably ask for full scale pounding on a band of sheep.
Just a question of drill and experience.
