The merc autospawning to replenish is something I would like too - where does all our gold go if they continue asking the same amount for 50 or for 0 men?
But it's very unlikely to happen unfortunately

I consider the proportional increase to be "Imminent Danger Pay". The boss knows you've killed off most or all his troops with your warmongering ways!

No, he just pockets the extra cash. 
Note that if you don't hire a merc, he will sometimes hang around with for a while with a lower asking price. Thus the price can drop if he has so few men that no one wants to hire him. Usually, though, if no one hires him he just goes back to his cave to cry himself to sleep.

Meh. As their minions are mostly summons or quite common indie, I wouldn't find strange if the merc bosses hire/summon new men from time to time to continue being competitive (and alive? ) on the market.
