Normal procedure is: The commander you want to rename, click on him with right mouse button to get his personal screen. Then just press "r" and write his new name in the popup
You cannot rename pretenders, prophets and commanders in the HoF

Does it work? Or you were asking for something else and I didn't understand?

Just to let you all know I'll be away from Saturday until Monday, in case everyone sends in their pretenders then gets out their torch and pitchforks when the game hasn't started. Rest assured first thing I'll do when I get home is to check and see if we're ready to launch
