Nostalgia: Yes, they have a big edge in technology, and so far when a larger enemy fleet has attacked us we've had to rely on planetary defenses to turn the tide. Having said that, Remorhaz has just started deploying Phased Poloron Beams and targeting computers, which should help even the odds us and help us take down their big ships. At least I hope, but skipping shields would make a HUGE difference!
