 I would suggest you play Arcoscephale.
 The nation has healers.
 Astral magic, so you can horror mark the opponents.
 No death, so no undead afflictions.
 And some big stompy elephants for the lulz.

 It's not that easy to assassinate a god with horror marks.  Returning/appropriate gear can make a pretender nearly immune to the majority of horrors, and even some doom horrors aren't nearly autodeath.

 There is a mod that adds a spell that removes horror marking. Do a search on this forum.

 If you plan on using a combat pretender past about turn 18, you should be giving that pretender a sweet gear load so he can just solo doom horrors.  I don't think there's a single one that a well-equipped SC pretender can't take.
 At which point, how horror marked your pretender is doesn't really matter.
