It was my hobos grinding out apostacy. Which I didn't script, because I'd previously read about how it was still kinda worthless in CBM 1.94 despite best intentions to the contrary.

I can only conclude that you got very very unlucky, in that it actually was something of a pain in the backside?

Stupid spell casting AI :-(
