The Jpz1's 4.7cm Czechoslovakian gun is not weak - its as good as the 50mm L/42. And its available in France, before the 5cm is widely fitted. Sabot comes later on - but the thing is still miles better than a 37mm when dealing with French armour.

The Jpz1 is cheap and so is still worth it in early Barbarossa - till the masses of T34 turn up in early 1942 anyhow. About half the cost of a panzer 3 early model with the L/42 and 15 sabots.

IMHO the later model JPz.1 is still worth it in the opening stages of Russia (if used wisely) - e.g. with a pair guarding each leg rifle coy against local armour threats.

I often do the same as Russian with the T-60 added a section of 2 per rifle coy, as it is a useful and cheap as chips little grunt-basher with its 20mm auto-cannon + MG, but not so hot on armour in this case! - or a pair of Stuarts (lots of extra MGs for grunt-bashing) for any Allied leg rifle co. Any JPz.1 in my GE core I morph to Marders or similar in 42. They'll tend to die a lot more than your core medium tanks of course, but their inevitable occasional sacrifices helps protect the core riflemen for a relatively small points outlay.
