Troops are excellent to stop riots. I always use them. They get to stay on the "liberated" world as long as it takes. (usually not that long)

Um, this is going to sound evil, but I enjoyed spacing them. It was quick and easy, and no more riotes.

would you think less of me if I said that i spend resources capturing ships such as colony ships just so I can space the colonists or order fleets to fire on them?

Yes it was sick and evil to space them that was a waste of good slave colonists to work in the mines of your worlds especially if they breathe a different atmosphere type than you.

Here we see yet another classic example of that hoary old maxim. Maybe you can sell the rights to your Empire's story and then Hollywood can make a movie out of it and call it.. hmmm... let's see.. "Space Hitler". LOL.
