Re: Tech Trading - newbie question
Suppose get a ship with Temporal or Crystalline tech in a trade - do you get that technology?

Only if you also have selected the racial technology. Two crystaline races can trade each other's techs, for example.

Re: Tech Trading - newbie question
is there any way to make it so you can get Racial techs with out having selecting it by modding the game somehow?

I didn't think analyzing would give you tech unless you already had the prerequisite...

Someone (I think Suicide Junkie) came up with a way for racial techs to be traded to players who don't have the appropriate trait - I don't remember exactly how it works but I think it involves adding a second, dummy prerequisite that is researchable so the game doesn't think it's a racial tech or something...

I didn't think analyzing would give you tech unless you already had the prerequisite... I've gotten all 3 levels of cloaking by analyzing captured ships, well before I'd even bothered researching Physics 2, much less cloaking's prerequisite of Physics 3 (yeah, I know, Physics 2 gives you the uber-weapon Phased Polaron Beam, but it was a single-player game and I prefer to use the Temporal weapons anyway).

Yep. Just take out the racial number from the second step of tech.
For instance: Most of the racial techs have a single prereq like Crystallurgy or something. Then this opens Cyrstaline Weapons and Crystaline Technology. (The specifics here may be wrong). What you do is leave Crystallurgy a racial tech area, by leaving in the racial number. But you take the racial number out of Cyrstaline Weapons and Crystaline Technology.
What this does: You can't research any of them no matter what, but you can capture the weapon components or other things and analyze them.
Pretty sure that is how it works
