You don't get that? I'm guessing the < on top of his head is the hat they are known to wear. The pointy tops. And the | for his eyes are the way Chinese's eyes look. But that's my guess. I don't know for sure.

Im glad they omitted the obvious "user is a big boy" extension off of the "big girl"

Hmmm... I always interpreted " ^ " as broken nose (assuming " - " is an intact nose). So how can he be happy ?
