Re: What are weapon mounts?
Pathogen,
SEIV is loaded with things like that. You can play for months and months, and then suddenly someone will point out one new trick that can change your whole playing style... kinda cool
Oh, and the AI will always try to use the most potent mount for its ships; you need to know that to estimate how much damage you can have coming at you.

Re: What are weapon mounts?
Yep... see those little letters on the AI's weapons in the enemy designs view (and yours when you put mounted weapons on)? Those are abbreviations for the weapon mounts - L for Large (2x damage ships / 3x bases), H for Heavy (3x damage ships / 5x bases), and Massive (5x damage ships / 7x bases). (And the base and weapon platform Versions get range and to-hit bonuses, too - an ordinary Ripper Beam might not be a threat - just move faster than he does and he can't hit you - a Massive Base Mount Ripper Beam can shoot as far as all but the most advanced ship weapons and causes a WHOLE LOT of damage!!!)

No, the AI uses the Last mount entry in CompEnhancements.txt that is available to the particular size of ship. In the standard game, they are arranged so that the stronger ones are at the end. But if you add a new mount after the Massive ship mount that is available to any ship size, all AI ships will use it, even if it reduces damage to 1% or something.

my statement was too sweeping and plain wrong outside of vanilla SEIV. Fyron, you are entirely correct.
