I learned the key was to be yourself (in my case a videogame dork) right out of the box. Then if she sticks around, she's accepted it. I have most of my old systems along with quite a selection of games.

I've employed this strategy for 16 years with considerable success -- I'm still single, after all!

Re: intermediate results
I can say in all honesty that Dom 3 has had an adverse effect on my marriage-my wife's threatened to smash my laptop into little bits on more than one occasion, because I spend the majority of my free time playing this game.
I've currently got my laptop hidden, because I figure, if she can't see it, she won't think about it as much, and then I can play it to my heart's content when she's not around.

Re: intermediate results
Old games (like Might and Magic: World of Xeen) used to have a "boss key" which you could hit in case of an emergency, and then it would display something harmless: a DOS screen for example, or a spreadsheet. Newer games no longer have it.

Kristoffer! Johan! Save our marriages!
Can we ask the devs to add a feature where, when you hit the ESC key, the screen turns into a beautiful valentine that we can print out and give to our rightfully embittered spouses?
After all, they're the ones that got us into this mess

I just ended up getting my wife a Nintendo DS and a copy of Brain Age and Puzzle Quest. I haven't seen her in weeks.
Speaking of Puzzle Quest, if you like (or your loved one likes) Bejeweled with RPG elements, I highly recommend the demo for the PC, which should eventually come out as a full version. It is also available for the 360, PSP, DS, and eventually the PS3 as well.

I imported a pink DS from Japan (before they came out in the states), Animal Crossing, and Tetris for her wedding present. She loved it.
