Hell my 1.0 gig HD cost me $200.00 bucks back in the day and we all marvled at its storage capacity and now, it is still working and has paid for itself 10 fold.

My Last HD to fail was the one that came with this HP predessor and it was an 80 gig hard drive.

I can get a 200 gig HD for $120.00 bucks now. Less then a $1.00 a gig now. Compare that to the $200.00 a gig I paid for my 1.0 gig HD five years ago.

I think that is an astronomical decrease in price.

When I was in college, one of my professors said that what is generally roughest on a hard drive is switching it on and off. They Last longer if you just let them run. The power use can't be that expensive. I have never had one fail...yet.

Guess what prices will be in 5 years - 300 terabyte for 100$ ? Of course, Windows 3000 will need at least 20 gig HD space then...

My first hard drive I have seen was a small cabinet about 1 m high and 60x60cm in size. 40MB. Belonging a "mainframe server" with 32 Users connected to it, 2 processors with 64kB RAM each - filling several wardrobe-sized cabinets. Price something with 6 figures. Well, about 30 years ago...

Technical development in this area has really been breathtaking, faster than in any other area before. I see signs of slowing down, but not really an end.

Well I'm not that old so...

But being a hardware maniac I've had my share of HDD.

My first one was a 1 Gb HDD *about...6 years ago* aquired with a 586 computer which ran for 4 with no difficulties until the power source burned it down . Very sad moment.

Then i got a 500 MB Samgung one which Lasted till 6 months ago when it suddently died

I leaped ahead with a 10 GB one *quantum fireball* which Lasted about 2 years until while diembeling the whole computer *like i frequestly do* i droped my toolbox right on top of the hdd... Guess that was too much for it

I currently have a IBM DEATHstar 80 GB 7200 rpm ATA 133 *which has Lasted for 2 years and still lives quite well*, one 80 Gb Maxtor 7200 rpm ATA 133 and 40 GB Maxtor the same specifications.

200 Gb of movies, games, programs

Still got two 20 Megs HDD's, altough they don't run very much these days they are still flawless and Last summer they ran for about 10 hours..

The computer I still use is a 1999 IBM Aptiva with the original 8 GB HD. No problems yet, but I'm thinking it may be time to add a second drive, and back up to it.

edit: (gigabytes, silly me)

Update...

Well the problem turned out to be a PSU problem

So I have a new 400 watt powersupply and case coming.... Today....

So I will still be slow on the game turn arounds... And some games are running on the download game... open up turn... and then hit end turn and then upload it ... 233 is a bad speed for these games.

To all the players and PBW Game Hosts... Thank you so much for your understanding in these troubled times...

On a side note... I discovered this thing called a back yard... Very cool...

If you're blowing up all the new computers, maybe you should consider the power you're putting in...

Old computers are tough as nails, but you might need a power conditioner or UPS to smooth things out for the new ones.
Perhaps see if there's a signal analyser around that you can use on the wall outlets...

Tesco, I must order you to head back inside right now. Back yards are dangerous players that us gaming geeks just don't understand

Stand back guys, there's nothing to see here
