Default 3D modeling

I know this was probably already covered a few hundred times, but what programs are out there that would be good to create 3D modeled shipsets and where can I get them?

Free: POVray, Truespace (is this free?)

Not free: 3d Studio Max (3d Max 4 just released, I think), Lightwave 6, maybe Rhino and Bryce

REALLY not free: Maya 3.01, SoftImage

I really don't much about the free stuff, as I don't use them. Now that you know what's out there, a search through Yahoo's directories should yield some more useful information.

TrueSpace 5 by Caligari is a commercial product.

I had never heard of POVray. Thanks for the tip. A free 3D renderer is an amazing thing when consider that at $795, TrueSpace is likely the least expensive of the programs mentioned.

You can get Moray, which works as a frontend for POV-Ray. Its shareware so you can download it and try it out and see how you like it. It's not very expensive compared to a lot of the others out there. I've been learning how to use it and I like it pretty well. I haven't tried any of the others so I have nothing to compare that to though. Quite a few of the current shipset designers use Moray.

There is going to be a freeware Version of 3D StudioMax 4 released by the company soon. it will be called GMax and is intended for game mod makers (like us). May they release it soon.

What ColdSteel said (he beat me too it, can't post from work).

The url for Moray is : http://www.stmuc.com/moray/

I just bought it for about DM 150 or $85 US or somefink like that

Lastime I priced Lightwave it ran about $1200-1500 US, soooooo

I haven't figgered it out yet but when I do, my Brachyura will have their own custom shipset.

You forgot something with the Moray: www.stmuc.com/moray
For Moray 3.3 (rocks so much, it has OpenGL preview now)
and you need POV-Ray to use Moray www.povray.org

The two will hover, spinning inches above the ground. With a giant buttered cat array, a high-speed monorail could easily link New York with Chicago.
