If there were units in your army which are not in the province afterwards, two possibilities exist: 1) that they were under the effect of poison or decay or somesuch, and so died, or 2) that the battle result you saw was not the actual battle, due to some incompatibility of OS or versions.
edit: I believe routed units from a magical phase battle will appear in the retreated to province in time for the normal battle there, though.

In the original post I edited out the bit about the 40 units.
The point was that the 10 units remaining on the map should have stayed in province and did not.
No special effects were in play. Could be a case of "the combat you see is not the one that occurred". Or not. Either way, its hard to call non deterministic and non reproducible behavior anything other than a bug.

Department of Redundancy Department strikes again?
Dunno about the routings, at least for routed units it's exactly as it should have been. Cutting off an enemy escape is true and tried tactic.
But Ermor's troop loss is quite spectacular, don't know how many people have achieved that even intentionally against someone else. Well you've still got the troops to spare.

Yeah the troops are easily replaced It was less than 3 turns of reanimation that was lost and I have hundreds more already in place taking back the lost provinces so its not too bad. Just really annoying because it was a loss because of the stupid battle turn limit or whatever. Had the battle continued I would have ended with all commanders and about 300 troops left.

Re: Preponderance - Big Team Game! [starting!]
chrispedersen - I see two combats, one where your commander and his troops fight my ally's army, and another where your theurgs are routed by my province defense. You lose both.
Did you mean to move the commander as well?

...I can't say anything conclusive, but I have this distinct feeling you and your ally aren't the only ones poor chrispedersen faces at moment. Unless I'm totally oblivious to current political situation. Which of course wouldn't be that surprising.

Attack rear only seems to attack the rearmost regular troops, not commander types like the telestic animate.

Re: Preponderance - Big Team Game! [starting!]
I don't think that's quite right. I believe that attack rear tries to choose targets farther to the back, but it's simply not reliable in choosing the very rearmost target. Certainly I've seen a lot of inconsistency in how my troops "interpret" that order, even with identical setups.

Are you sure you don't mean the battles with me in 106 and 121? Because that describes exactly what happened this turn. The commander was supposed to join the theurgs in their attack but for some reason it didn't happen(I might have forgotten to tell him to but I was sure I did). No matter, its a minor setback.

Commander? That was a prophet in heavy disguise, surely.
