Research/intel in SE:IV proceeds by individual projects, while you can set the % of research/intel to spend on projects in SE:III or SE:V.

Well consider how the ground combat looked in se4....now consider some more. There! I think you've got it ground combat in se4 was just a screen with the units listed then it did some damage calculations and decided how the battle went. With se5 the screenshots would indicate you finally have some tactical control over combat even if it is crude it is a massive improvemnt over se4.

SEIV is always going to be a successful game in its own right and I will bet a ship set, that it will remain popular long after SE V has been released. As it stands, I am as excited as a father of a 16 year old girl on prom night as I wait for the release of SE V.

No. But I think that some elements of SE:IV like the ability to easily add shipsets and the existing mod base and pbw system will keep it going for some time.
