I just took over Pangaea with lots of vampires in MP. I thought that a vampire lord scripted with attack one turn, 4 x hand of death, with a few vampire bodyguards (to reduce chances of him being hit) would be a good defense against raiding thugs and SCs.

So, Lanka is raiding me with Dakainis and I set this up in a few provinces. First turn vampire lord and his bodyguards surround dakini and then instead of killing her with the hand of death, vampire lord casts soul vortex and disintegrates. He's in range of a touch spell.

I would imagine this to be a common tactic. Anybody else had his vampire lords refuse obedience?

I think it's ridiculous that vampire lords don't have 30 moral and can be routed in assassinations. If they die, they reappear in your capital, but if they retreat they are gone for good.

I think it's important to note that the Life Drain is -not- subject to an MR check. I just lost a nicely geared tart (buffed to 31 MR) to about 30 vampires in 2 combat rounds..... I feel very cheated. 8 \

I don't know what gave you the idea that life drain is MR. But your tartarian was very badly equiped, that's why he died. With the right equipment, he would of made short work of them (hint: vine shield).

I thought vine shield doesn't work against flyers?

Sure it does.

He was very nicely equipped specifically to face your Disintegration spammers, and (I -thought-), your vampires. Had I known that the Life Drain was not MR, I certainly would not have sent him in there like that.

(EDIT - Vine Shield is so overappreciated. In this specific case, it may have been a better option, but if he could resist the Life Drain, the Lead Shield with the rest of the setup for 31 MR, would have been superb.)

Some Life Drain attacks are MR. For example, a Mind Lord's only melee attack is "Soul Leech", which is an AN+MR aoe-1 life drain attack.
