Scanners
Hey all,
How do I use long range scanners? I created a ship with Long Range Scanners II, but can't seem to use the ability. Should let me scan up to 3 sectors away, but I'm not sure how. Any ideas?

Re: Scanners
Hey there,
Scanners automatically work. If an enemy ship is x sectors away you can click on it and see what components are in it.

I'm with you. Dang!!
Mostly, when I attack a colony with insufficient force, I just press End turn repeatedly and hope the planet doesn't launch fighters to attack me way out on the edge of the map. But it sure would be nice to have a scanning tech higher up the tech tree that lets you see *at least* what kind of weapons are on the satellites if not also showing you what's in the planet's cargo as well as their contents.

Re: Scanners
That is unfortunate. That's another one of those features SE3 had that was left out of SE4 - one of the nice ones I might add...

Re: Scanners
You can scan satellites that are in orbit, the other alternative is to bring along a 'scout' fighter or frigate to dive ram the planet to get a peek at its cargo.

Which won't help you squat in a simultaneous movement game since the after battle report won't tell you what carog the planet had. I'm more and more getting the feeling strategic play was added as an afterthought since so many things you can easily do in turn based movent are hard to impossible to do in sim turn games.

Re: Scanners
I've always been able to see what any item contains when I enter combat. I just right click on it. Isn't that the way it is suppose to work?

Re: Scanners
Yes, Marty, that's how it works in turn based movement games where you can play tactical combats, but in simultaneous movement games you can't play tactical, only strategic. And strategic combat leaves alot to desire, especially when it comes to after combat reports. Like someone else said in thread long ago in a galaxy far away: "The public get better combat information from CNN then the empire leaders". Or something like that anway. Basically, strategic combat leaves you feeling you miss vital information of what the hell just happened.
