				Gems and the AI

Is there any way to keep you Mages from burning through there gems in a battle where they just don't need them?

For example I had a mage cast Flame arrow on 50 crossbowmen. That right there was going to be enough to win the battle.

But at the end of the battle he had used all 6 gems. (I did script 4 other spells that did not need gems)

The only thing I can think of is have a hiding priest follow with the extra gems and just give him one a battle.
Suggestions.

As far as I've read, that's what people generally do. Scouts are cheaper for it.

Scouts are cheaper than most priests, but Man has Monks that cost 30 and are Stealthy AND Sacred, thus costing only 1 upkeep (to a Scout's 1.33).

I don't play Marignon, though, so don't know what they have.

Marignon has stealthy Priest-2 friars that cost, mmm, 40 IIRC. Using the monks or friars (or Pangaea's dryads, also stealthy priest types but much more expensive) has the added advantage over the scouts that you have preaching ability along in the same package.
