Some themes require a non-preferred temperature.
At least with Fires of Faith and Niefelheim you're *gaining* points to do so.
Blood of Humans gets *less* points to take a non-preferred temperature, a lower base gem income, can't take a magic scale (essential for any Abysia, but especially one with cheap weak researchers) and no Anathemants outside the capitol. In exchange they get axe throwers, the Newt, Sanguine Acolyte (and Sanguine Anathemant but he's weaker than the Demonbred they don't get), and it's slightly easier to incorporate indies/mercs in their order of battle. Although they've definitely been improved, I think they still have a ways to go. Allow magic +1 and one or two slaves from the Temple Sanguine, maybe?

Re: small question on heat/cold scales and themes
These themes indeed require a non-prefered temperature.
Edit:
a bit too late I was.
Another thing:
As climate isnt stable at all, meaning that for example if you play normal Abysia with Heat 3,you will quite often get only Heat 2 or worse in your provinces, for some themes this is no big deal, like Niefelheim.
More problematic is Blood of the Humans,as its quite likely that you will often have only Heat 1 in your provinces and that means quite an income loss for prefered Heat 3.

Re: small question on heat/cold scales and themes
No, Same for Niefelheim. BoH is handicapped more than most others, as they lose points that they would have got AND lose income/ress./supplies in that temperature.
EDIT: Damn, late. I really love the folks of this forum!

Right, thanks much to all.
Oh and I agree about BoH -- it has been made slightly less handicapped, but it is still a "challenging" race.

small question on heat/cold scales and themes
