Default Copying Dom2... (Linux/Technical)

Can I just copy the Dom2-folder to another machine and expect the program to run properly? Both laptops (x86) run almost the same kind of Linux and the game is only installed locally (single-user) on the source machine...

Alternatively, I guess it would be helpful for me if someone could post/send the code of the Linux-Install Shell-script from the CD, so that I might learn whether some environment variables must be set.

Reason: I need to move my stuff to a new Laptop and give back my old one to my previous employer, but since I am moving myself, my Dom2-CD is packed away in Munich while I am already in Scotland - and I do not want to interrupt an ongoing MP-game. Note that there is no issue whatsoever with the CD-key, as I know that it is stored in readable format in the current Dom2-folder and since it is only myself who whishes to play.

If it works on Windows, it should definately work on Linux, since Linux (and other Unixes) don't have the retarded concept of embedding everything into a registry that makes it almost impossible to even move software to a different drive on the same machine without a complete reinstall.

I do agree.
A plain copy of your /usr/local/games/dominions2 and /home/chazar/dominions2 to the right places should work.
Maybe you'll have to fix your permissions in your home directory, though. And make sure you have a proper libsdl/libGL installed on your new laptop.
Try it and tell us.

I posted to fast. If you have a single user install, a plain copy of the dominions2 in your homedir should be sufficient.
I attach the shell script in case of need.
(I added a .txt to the filename as the forum didn't let me attach a file without this. Windows oddity, I guess )

Thanks for all the info everyone!

Thanks fot the script! It does not do anything unusal, so copying seems fine...if only my new machine would arrive now, so that I might try!

BTW, why can't one choose arbitrary resolutions in Dom2? I would assume that the graphic engine is scaling things anyway, so why dont they allow resolutions like, say, 1680x1050?

Sez Kristoffer O:

It is easy to set your own favorite resolution by using some commandline switches.

--res 1920 1200

should do what you want.
(though in your case, --res 1680 1050 might be better)

Cool, one should never underestimate the cmd-line! I thought the settings from the option menu were all that are possible...

I have 7 different icons on my windows machine for opening Dom2. Different settings for resolution, turning off things that make it slow like the music, fades, clicks, etc. And using different directorys so I can keep versions and maps straight. I have another dozen or which automatically connect to the proper site for games Ive been in. On my linux I have 12 scripts that call it differently.

Yes, command line switches are for those who can figure them out.

Yeah, I am using scripts to connect to the different online games already, and I've read doc/command_line_switches.txt sometime ago - a time when resolution did not matter to me...
